     As part of ULI’s continuing efforts to increase awareness and understanding around diversity, equity, and inclusion, we are excited to announce that we have engaged Dr. Kira Hudson Banks to conduct a training on “Developing an Equity Mindset.” The training will take place virtually over two sessions on July 21st and 22nd from 3:00pm-4:30pm MDT each day. Dr. Banks is a nationally recognized equity leader, author, professor, and researcher and has served as an advisor to the Ferguson Commission.
     
    The training will provide the framework and foundation needed to change behaviors and patterns in an organization and create a more equitable environment. While virtual, the sessions will be interactive with opportunities for breakout room discussions and engagement.
     
    Here are descriptions of the sessions:
     
    Developing an Equity Mindset: Foundational Concepts
    Part 1 will lay the groundwork by providing individuals at all levels an understanding of applying an equity lens. Dr. Banks will lead us through how to understand and implement diversity, equity, and inclusion to create lasting and sustainable change.
     
    Developing an Equity Mindset: Next Steps
    Part 2focuses on you as an individual within an organization committed to system-level change. It builds on the foundation from Part 1 to help you identify your sphere of influence to move equity forward within your organization and industry. We’ll be breaking out into small groups to discuss topics including unconscious bias, intergroup interactions in the workplace, developing a common language and vocabulary, and how to be accountable for change.
     
    Topics include:
    • Understanding one’s social identity and biases and the implications for interactions in the workplace
    • The importance of developing a common language
    • How to be accountable to change
    • Tips for facilitating dialogue
    • Other skills that support individuals within an organization on the path to equity
    These trainings are intended to support you in your work inside and outside of ULI. We see this as a great leadership development opportunity for you as equity, diversity, and inclusion are becoming increasingly central to our business and the communities we work in.

    Kira Banks

    Co-Founder, Institute for Healing Justice and Equity, Saint Louis University

    Dr. Kira Hudson Banks has been working to support individuals and groups to understand themselves, others, and systems of oppression for over 20 years. Her teaching, research, and community involvement is rooted in the values of Black Psychology, which uplifts the interconnectedness and resilience of people and rejects an individual and deficit approach. Banks enjoys facilitating difficult dialogues and has been described as making complex and controversial topics accessible and intergroup interactions more understandable. She has done so in schools, communities, institutions of higher education, and corporations. Banks’ expertise was sought after and she served as a racial equity consultant for the Ferguson Commission and continued as the Racial Equity Catalyst for Forward Through Ferguson. Her thinking and writing has helped frame racial equity in the St. Louis region. Currently, Banks is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Saint Louis University, an APA-accredited Clinical Psychology doctoral program. Her research examines the experience of discrimination, its impact on mental health, and intergroup relations. Her courses have ranged from Abnormal Psychology to the Psychology of Racism. Banks has published over two dozen articles in peer-reviewed outlets including the American Psychologist, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Journal of Black Psychology, and Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. She has also contributed to The Harvard Business Review and popular media outlets such as Huffington Post and The Atlantic. Banks has developed a YouTube Channel to translate psychological concepts for lay people. She believes strongly that research should be useful and can inform our every day lives. One series on the channel is Raising Equity, which explores what it looks like to intentionality raise children with an equity mindset-with the knowledge and understanding of systemic inequities and to equip them to create an equitable society rather than accept the status quo. Banks is also co-principal of The Mouse and the Elephant, which develops customized curriculum to meet companies’ long-term needs. She received her BA from Mount Holyoke College, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and her MA and PhD from the University of Michigan.
