The Heart of Uptown: Blurring the Boundaries of Seattle Center

Initially settled by the Denny family in the late 1800s, Uptown is one of Seattle’s oldest neighborhoods. Its urban form has been shaped over time by several significant developments, including the 1962 World’s Fair, which established Seattle Center and the iconic Space Needle—symbols of Seattle’s innovative spirit. Today, the heart of the Uptown hinges on the boundaries of Seattle Center, the city’s 74-acre civic campus, which hosts over 12 million visitors and 5,000 events each year. Now in its 56th year, Seattle Center is home to a range of arts, entertainment, sports and educational organizations, from Key Arena, Seattle Repertory Theater and Marion Oliver McCaw Hall to the Museum of Pop Culture, Pacific Science Center and independent radio station KEXP.

Uptown itself is also growing. The Uptown Urban Center, comprised of 297 acres, is home to 9,300 residents and 15,000 jobs. By 2035, the neighborhood, flanked by employers such as Holland America, Expedia and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will gain an additional 6,000 residents and 3,500 jobs. This panel and walking tour will explore the evolving relationship between Seattle Center and Uptown’s residents and businesses, both new and established, that have taken root at its boundaries. Panelists will discuss economic and transit impacts of a large, regional civic campus on the growth and character of Uptown—and the ways in which public, private and civic life tend to blur and brew at its edges.
