"Urbanism Without Effort" by Charles R. Wolfe

Please join ULI Northwest and Futurewise for our first book release party: Book and Brew with Charles R. Wolfe, author of the new e-book Urbanism Without Effort.  Read the Press Release here.  Pre-order the Kindle edition here.

Urbanism Without Effort is a new book by ULI Northwest Board Member Chuck Wolfe; the book explores “what happens naturally when people congregate in cities—innate, unprompted interactions of urban dwellers with each other and their surrounding urban and physical environment.” Chuck, whose writing regularly appears in The Atlantic and Huffington Post, explores underlying rationales for urban policy, planning and regulation from a historical perspective, with an eye for the everyday uses of urban space. He draws on his professional experiences as a land use and environmental lawyer, providing compelling vignettes from everyday urban life.

Successful community, Chuck argues, is among the first principles of what makes humans feel happy, and therefore city dwellers invariably celebrate environments where and when they can co-exist safely, in a mutually supportive way. Chuck believes such celebration is most interesting when it occurs spontaneously—seemingly without effort. He believes it is critical to first isolate these spontaneous and latent examples of successful urban land use, before applying any prescriptive government policies or initiatives.

Unique in the field of contemporary urbanist writing, the book illuminates the extraordinary in ordinary urban life with rich illustrations and a reintroduction to urbanism of the past. Chuck offers readers inspiration, historical context, and a better understanding of how a sustainable, inviting urban environment is created.
